What are mineral resource estimates?

Global stock exchange commissions require that the mining industry use strict criteria to define and report mineral resource grades. For mines in Canada, these criteria are set out in a document called the National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101) in which mineral resource estimates are subdivided into inferred, indicated and measured categories.

An inferred estimate has a lower level of confidence than an indicated estimate which, in turn, has a lower level of confidence than a measured estimate. The map below details current gold exploration and activities in Nova Scotia as of 2012, and makes note of what mineral resource estimates are used.

1. Touquoy-Moose River Project

Atlantic Gold – DDV
Resource Estimate: 656,000 troy ounces (measured, indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Environmental Assessment Approval and Mineral Lease granted
  • Industrial Approval pending
  • Low cost, bulk mining deposit defined
  • Planned start-up of mine construction 2013

2. Mooseland Project

NSGold Corp.
Resource Estimate: 390,000 troy ounces (inferred)
Highlights:

  • Site of N.S. first gold discovery, 1860
  • Considerable underground development in 1988 & 2004
  • 2010 & 2011 drilling intersected several new gold veins

3. Beaver Dam Project

Acadian Mining Corp.
Resource Estimate: 950,000 troy ounces (measured, indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Considerable underground development during the 1980s
  • Potential target for low cost, bulk mining
  • Shared mill with Fifteen Mile Stream Deposit being considered

4. Fifteen Mile Stream Project

Acadian Mining Corp.
Resource Estimate: 308,000 troy ounces (inferred)
Highlights:

  • Potential target for low cost, bulk mining
  • Very promising 2011 drilling results
  • Ongoing drilling to further expand gold resource estimates
  • Shared Mill with Beaver Dam Deposit being considered

5. Cochrane Hill Project

Atlantic Gold – DDV
Resource Estimate: 549,000 troy ounces (indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Potential target for low cost, bulk mining
  • Mined during 1970s
  • Ongoing drilling to expand gold resource estimates

6. Forest Hill Project

Acadian Mining Corp.
Resource Estimate: 255,000 troy ounces (indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Mining between 1985-1989 produced 20,516 troy ounces
  • Excellent underground gold potential
  • Recent drilling discovered new gold-bearing veins

7. Coxheath Project

Silvore Fox Minerals Corp.
Highlights:

  • Historic mining of copper from 1881-1889 and 1928-1930 also produced low grade gold
  • Drilling in 2011 intersected zones of copper and molybdenum with gold levels between 0.10-0.33 grams/tonne

8. Stirling Project

Thunderman Resources Inc.
Highlights:

  • Historic production of over 1 million tonees of zinc, lead, copper, silver, gold ore between 1930-1955 produced 16,681 troy ounces gold
  • Drilling and geophysical surveys in 2011 defined 2 new “deep” targets 8 km southwest of former mine
  • Further surveys and drilling in 2012 will test these targets

9. Goldboro Project

Orex Exploration Inc.
Resource Estimate: 803,120 troy ounces (measured, indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Excellent underground mining target with numerous, high grade gold veins
  • Drilling in 2010 and 2011 showed gold-bearing veins occur outside the known vein zones

10. Goldenville Project

Acadian Mining Corp.
Resource Estimate: 183,000 troy ounces (indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Nova Scotia’s largest historic gold producer (212,000 troy ounces)
  • Underground gold mining target

11. Harrigan Cove Project

Stay Gold Inc.
Highlights:

  • Historic production was from shallow workings but 1980s drilling proved gold veins exist to at least 250 m depth
  • Drilling in 2012 intended to establish a 43-101 compliant gold resource estimate

12. Dufferin Project

Ressources Appalaches
Highlights:

  • Has existing Mineral Lease and Environmental Assessment Approval
  • Produced 10,599 troy ounces in 1999 and 2003
  • Operator in process of returning mine to production

13. Tangier Project

Acadian Mining Corp.
Resource Estimate: 147,000 troy ounces (indicated & inferred)
Highlights:

  • Underground development during 1980’s produced 1,658 troy ounces
  • Has existing Environmental Assessment Approval
  • Further drilling planned to increase gold resource estimates

14. Mill Village Project

CANUC Resources Corp.
Highlights:

  • Drilling in 2012 to test for new gold-bearing veins
  • Planned de-watering of the historic mine to allow further underground development and sampling
